A study of Barcelona's historical evolution from Roman origins to modern times, with a focus on urbanism, art and architecture. Compares the Catalan capital to other major European cities such as Rome, Paris and London.

Course Description

Barcelona City Planning and ArchitectureThis course follows Barcelona's evolution from a Roman outpost to its present-day status as an intercultural world city. A focus on urbanism and art will provide the context for an analysis of Barcelona's city planning and architecture as compared to other major European cities: Rome, Paris, London, Amsterdam, Berlin and Venice.

Students will learn to identify the significant European art styles and recognize these in various architectural settings. Sites of relevance in Barcelona will be visited to provide an enriched understanding of the city's history and architecture.
