Course Description
Using Catalonia as a case study, this course examines how nationalism – the development of political communities based on a shared ethnicity or culture – shaped the emergence of modern states. The course will also delve into the challenges created by sub-nationalism within these nation-states, such as the current ethnic tensions in Catalonia, the Basque Country, Ireland, and other parts of the globe.
An important part of the course will involve the evolution and implications of minority nationalism and multiculturalism in the modern nation-state. Students will also learn about issues with national identity created by the emergence of multinational organizations such as the United Nations and the European Union.
