Course Description
The cultural, religious and political evolution of societies in the Mediterranean Basin from ancient to modern times is examined in this course. A study of Mediterranean civilizations, religions and political institutions gives students an understanding of modern political-economic configurations (such the affluence of the North and poverty of the South) and historical causes for modern conflicts.
Palestine, the Balkans, Turkey and Greece are some of the territories studied in the context of civilizational clash and modernization theories. Particular emphasis will be placed on the post-World War II development of politics, economics and sociology in the Mediterranean.
