Spanish Civilisation and Culture

Uses art as a framework for the study of Spain’s rich and varied cultural heritage. Catalan, Castilian, Basque and Galician subcultures are considered within the context of Spanish civilization. Examines the evolution of Spanish values, lifestyle and society over the past five decades through artists like Picasso, Goya and Dalí.

Requirements: Graduate or Undergratuate students, minimum age: 18. Fluent in English.

Course Description

Spanish Civilisation and CultureThis course examines Spain’s rich and varied cultural heritage using Catalan, Castilian, Basque and Galician cultures as an introduction to Spanish civilization. Art is used as a framework for the study of Spanish values, lifestyle and society and the progression of Spain from a polarized country to a modern example of a cooperative and peaceful nation.

Era-defining figures such as Picasso, Miró, Dalí and Goya are used to tell the story of Spain’s cultural evolution over the past fifty years. A comparison between Spain and the US, the effect of globalization on Spanish culture and the future of Spain within the EU include some of the topics addressed.
